For decades, the cornerstone of member communication for the Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers has been a quarterly print publication known as  “The Insulators Journal.” The International Union packs a wide variety of information into the glossy magazine that is mailed to all members in both the U.S. and Canada.

In 2014, the Insulators Union decided it made sense to have the same team of professional writers, designers and editors that redesigned their website, take the lead producing their print publication.

The Communications Team that is part of LaborTools, powered by BMA Media Group, immediately got to work on a total redesign of The Journal -- with a focus on better organization, a modern style guide and efforts to expand content.

The Winter 2020 edition wrapped up another successful year of publication.

Union Messaging with a focus on the Members

The Journal documents meetings, conventions, conferences and seminars; delivers updates from the General President; as well accomplishments and notable projects from various Local Unions; important information on training initiatives; and health and wellness updates.

The union also has relied on The Journal as the primary source of information for documenting leadership changes, while also providing the most up-to-date Local Union information via the Local Union Directory section.

Cohesive Messaging across platforms

Not only does the Insulators Union trust BMA Media with its printed member communication, but their International website and social media.

Coordinating the use of the three outlets has provided the Insulators Union with the ability to match messaging, provide more targeted and timely information on specific platforms and supplemental assets that would not be possible or economical only using the print product.

Examples of this effort include supplemental pictures and timely announcements of union-wide matters. The Insulators Union utilizes online photo albums to segregate digital images into easy to find subjects, like job sites or union-wide events.

While some of these events produce hundreds of images, far fewer will appear in print. The pictures that the Union members share for various contests are made available and shared via links using other digital platforms.
