The Labor Citizen publishes content specifically geared to the union construction industry.

For over five years, LaborTools powered by BMA Media Group has produced The Labor Citizen, America’s oldest labor newspaper.

The monthly full-color tabloid provides critical information to building trade members about their specific unions, as well as big picture news and information that impacts members of organized labor. Articles cover topics such as regional and national building trades news, projects, political issues and construction issues, plus submissions from subscribing unions that update their members on events, notices and news that pertain specifically to that Local and its membership.

With roughly 50 contributing unions, who provide a mixture of photos and/or informative articles to their members, there is something for just about everyone in each edition.

Working on behalf of the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council, who own The Labor Citizen, LaborTools powered by BMA Media Group provides services required to publish the paper. The LaborTools staff delivers content creation, layout, design, submission editing, advertising and circulation. Once the newspaper is proofed, it is sent to Canton, Ohio and printed by a union press at The Repository before being shipped out to subscribers throughout the state of Ohio.

Throughout its history, the paper has been recognized as one of Ohio’s preeminent union publications. Today’s Labor Citizen is the result of a merger between The Cleveland Citizen, which produced 4,948 issues over 123 years, and The Ohio Labor Citizen, founded as a sister publication in 1988. In 2013, the Cleveland Building Trades voted to combine the two papers, thus forming The Labor Citizen.

Each month, our LaborTools team strives to put together a newspaper to not only capture the attention of our fellow building trade members, but also educate them about information important to their job, industry, region, state or country. With a staff that has more than 70-years of combined newspaper and print experience, LaborTools is proud to produce a paper that not only educates, but also looks good.

Since LaborTools has taken over publication duties of The Labor Citizen, we have proudly kept the publication’s monthly cost to 75 cents a member at a time when most daily newspapers have seen their subscription rates increase by more than 50 percent.

One of the more significant changes to occur to The Labor Citizen over the last five years is the paper’s partnership with Affiliated Construction Trades (ACT) Ohio. Starting in July 2016, ACT Ohio has published a four-page newsletter in The Citizen each quarter. Four times a year, ACT Ohio informs readers about work they are doing to advance the state’s building trades through political means or potential legal action. They also highlight significant union news as well.
